Phd Studentship University of Greenwich

Natural Resources Institute

A part-time PhD Studentship is available to carry out research into whiteflies as vectors of plant viruses and as direct pests of horticultural crops in the UK. Warmer summers in the UK, as a result of climate change, involve the risk that whitefly will become a greater threat to UK horticulture. The work will involve the establishment of an insect supply, laboratory-based bioassays, field trials and the molecular identification of whitefly populations and possibly viruses on a range of crops. The research will also explore the effects of host-plant resistance on virus and pest populations.

The student will join the Agriculture, Health & Environment Group at NRI, which carries out a broad range of interdisciplinary research with strong international and development-oriented links and will be supervised by:

Prof. John Colvin (j.colvin@gre.ac.uk)
Dr Susan Seal (s.e.seal@gre.ac.uk)
Mr Jerry Cooper (j.f.cooper@gre.ac.uk).

The Studentship (£8,500 per annum) is funded for four years by the Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich and will provide an opportunity, subject to recruitment through the University's normal procedure, for employment on a part time basis at Technician Grade 5 associated with work on tissue cultures and provision of assistance in the molecular laboratories. Applicants should have a good degree and experience in biology and/or entomology with interests in pest management, virology and/or molecular biology. Due to the nature of work nd the travel and locations involved full EU driving licence and permission to work within the EU is also essential.

Informal enquiries concerning details of the Studentship should be addressed by e-mail to all three supervisors. Application forms are available from Mark Parnell (m.parnell@gre.ac.uk) and applicants should send the completed form and a CV to Professor John Colvin, Natural Resources Institute, Central Avenue, Chatham Maritime, Kent ME4 4TB, UK.

Closing date for applications is 31st December 2007. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview and it is hoped that the Studentship can begin early in 2008.
